Axium Global Visit: Empowering Girls from the Slums at GIFT, Mumbai
In a heartwarming visit to the Girls Inspired for Tomorrow (GIFT) institute in Malad, Mumbai, the Axium Global team experienced firsthand the profound impact of this remarkable organisation. Engaging with the children in a welcoming environment, the team experienced personal connections and witnessed the transformative power of education and empowerment.
A non-governmental organisation dedicated to uplifting young girls living in the slums of Mumbai, GIFT primarily serves migrant children from families that have relocated to the city in search of better employment opportunities. GIFT provides a safe haven for these girls while their parents are at work.
Supporting over 100 girls of all ages, GIFT plays a crucial role as a daycare centre, offering a secure environment and mid-day meals. The organisation also facilitates admissions to nearby private schools, covering the entire educational expenses, including school fees, uniforms, textbooks and stationery.
GIFT’s support extends from school and college to undergraduate studies, ensuring that the girls can achieve financial independence. The organisation addresses the girls’ food, safety and health needs, providing medicines and hospitalisation when necessary.
Extracurricular activities include a tailoring course for both mothers and daughters, where GIFT provides sewing machines and funds to purchase materials on course completion. Girls are trained to paint, make diyas and craft costume jewellery that can be sold at exhibitions.
Regular meetings between social workers and the girls’ mothers raise awareness about their rights and address the challenges they face.
Axium Global’s contributions to GIFT have been exclusively focused on education. Funds have been donated for vocational courses, notebooks, stationery, private tuition, nursing college fees, bags, compass boxes, water bottles, raincoats, umbrellas and school fees. Through these contributions, Axium Global is helping to shape the futures of these young girls, empowering them to break the cycle of poverty and achieve their dreams.
